Expect that golf trip down south to cost a little more and the overheads on WestJet flights to warmer destinations to be a lot more crammed with news that the airline will start charging some economy fare customers a fee to check their first bag.
The fee will range somewhere between $25 and $29.50 on flights within Canada and the United States, according to this story from Global News.
The move will generate revenue, but will also reflect on WestJet’s reputation as a low-cost carrier, one that has been very profitable.
As the Financial Post pointed out in this story from earlier this year, WestJet is coming off a record year for earnings in 2013. That trend continued in its second quarter report as Bloomberg reported here in July.
That should give you a warm feeling even before you get to your sunny destination.
Industry analysts are expecting Air Canada to follow suit. Global News has that story here.
