White Or Black? Your Call With Cobra
April 20, 2011 by GNN · Leave a Comment
An upgraded RIP all-white shaft is one of the features of the Cobra White S3 driver from Cobra Golf, along with E9 Face Technology and Adjustable Flight Technology.
“We’re excited to be the only brand to offer both a white and black driver model to golfers this season, complete with our latest 2011 technologies,” said Brian Zender, senior vice president and general manager for Coba-Puma Golf.
E9 Face Technology is designed to expand the sweet zone by 30 per cent.
“We looked at tens of thousands of hits across the driver clubface and saw a distinct ball impact pattern from the low heel to high toe,” said Tom Preece, vice president of research and development for Cobra Golf.
“E9 Face Technology maximizes distance and accuracy from any point on the clubface, especially where golfers hit most often,” he added.
The Cobra White S3 Driver also features Cobra’s Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT) that offers three face-angle settings (open, neutral and closed), for golfers to dial in their ball flight for maximum distance and accuracy.

Cobra S3 Irons Offer E9 Face Technology
February 21, 2011 by GNN · Leave a Comment
The S3 irons from Cobra Golf have E9 Face Technology to create a progressive Sweet Zone that is dsigned around the impact patterns of typical golfers.
The Sweet Zone combines a thin, hot face design with multi-material technology and a stepped crescent sole
“The advancements we’ve made with E9 Face Technology, along with the use of multiple materials, make this our best feeling and performing iron yet,” said Brian Zender, senior vice president and general manager of Cobra-Puma Golf.
While many iron sets have the sweet spot on the centre of the face, Cobra says golfers hit in a horizontal elliptical pattern in long irons, an oval pattern in mid-irons and a circular pattern in short irons.
“Our research found that golfers hit different irons in distinct patterns on the face,” said Tom Preece, vice president of research and development for Cobra Golf.
“Each S3 iron is optimized based on these results, so golfers know they’ll be getting the performance they need from each iron,” he added.
The progressive cavity design in the S3s is designed to change the Sweet Zone from elliptical in the long irons to oval in the mid-irons and circular in the short irons.
Cobra also uses a high strength steel face in the long and mid-irons, allowing engineers to thin the face by 20 per cent, while increasing face flex for higher ball speed. The weight savings allowed the weight to be moved for more forgiveness.
The long and mid-irons are made of 17-4 hyper steel, a high-strength steel alloy composition that allows for a thinner, hotter clubface, while the short irons are made of 17-4 stainless steel.
Meanwhile, a new hidden, internal polymer topline and full cavity thermoplastic urethane combine to enhance weight distribution and dampen vibration.
The Cobra S3 Iron stock set composition is four through sand wedge for men and five through sand wedge for seniors and women.
Shaft choices include Aldila NV-3 graphite in various flexes, as well as Nippon NS Pro 1030H steel shafts. Cobra/Lamkin grips are standard.
Cobra also offers Baffler-style hybrids to replace the three through six irons.
Cobra S3 Max Iron-Hybrid Set
Cobra Golf has also introduced the S3 Max Iron-Hybrid set that combines low-profile, wide-sole irons with large profile, Baffler-style hybrids.
“Mid- and high-handicappers will find the Cobra S3 Max Iron-Hybrid set to be their savior set – especially if they’re looking for maximum forgiveness and high launch,” said Zender.
“And for those who want long irons instead of hybrids, we offer an all-iron version of the set as well, featuring superior forgiveness and high launch,” he added.
The S3 Max Iron-Hybrid and Iron sets are designed for an easy transition from hybrids or long irons to short irons.
The 431 stainless steel irons have a low profile, which helps move the centre of gravity back low and deep for a higher ball flight, while the wide sole lends stability to help straighten shots.
“Our main goal for the Cobra S3 Max Irons was to make them as forgiving as possible with high launch,” said Preece.
“We achieved this by redistributing weight throughout the iron. That said, the 17-4 stainless steel hybrid clubheads are even more forgiving than the irons, due to their larger head size and railed soles,” he said.
From hybrids to short irons, the Cobra S3 Max Iron-Hybrid Set is designed to provide consistent and reliable distances from one club to the next.
The low profile design shifts the centre of gravity low and back for improved launch and better forgiveness, while the railed, poweback sole is designed to improve turf interaction for more consistency and power at contact.
Cobra S3 Has E9 Face Technology
January 25, 2011 by GNN · Leave a Comment
The E9 face technology in the new Cobra S3 driver and S3 Max Driver is designed to expand the sweet zone by 30 per cent.
Instead of a circular sweet spot around the centre of the face, Cobra employs a canted, elliptical pattern.
Cobra combines the E9 face with a 6-4 titanium clubhead. The S3 driver also features Adjustable Flight Technology with three face-angle settings and comes with a Fujikura Blur shaft.
The Cobra S3 Driver is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees in men’s right-handed, and 9.5 and 10.5 degrees in left-handed. A women’s version is also offered in a 13.5-degree loft and Fujikura Blur TX 004 shaft.
The Cobra S3 Max Driver also has a 6-4 titanium clubhead and clubface, with E9 face technology. It differs from the Cobra S3 Driver in that its offset design is in place to help straighten out slices and fades.
The Cobra S3 Max is available in lofts of 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees in men’s right-handed, and 11.5 degrees in men’s left-handed, with a Fujikura Blur TX 005 shaft. A women’s version is also offered in a 15-degree loft and Fujikura Blur TX 004 shaft.
Cobra has also introduced its S3 Fairway and S3 Max Fairway with overized profiles.
The Cobra S3 Fairway is made of 17-4 stainless steel and a larger, hotter clubface and oversized profile helps increase the sweet zone.
The clubface is 25 per cent larger, while a high moment of inertia design offers forgiveness. The Cobra S3 Fairway generates a mid-high launch and a mid-draw bias ball flight.
The Cobra S3 Fairway is available in three, five and seven models with a Fujikura Blur TX 005 shaft and Cobra/Golf Pride grips.
Meanwhile, the 17-4 stainless steel Cobra S3 Max Fairway is designed to deliver maximum, draw-biased performance. Its new larger, hotter clubface and offset design promote draw-biased distance and ball flight with forgiveness from the fairway.

Puma Sharpens Its Edge With Cobra

The sale of Cobra from Acushnet to Puma that was announced Wednesday is one of those cases that sends folks in the golf industry full circle as it did with Canadians such as Ted Fletcher and Bob Cote, who will once again be handling a hard goods brand that they were involved with back in the 1990s.
Both have since landed with Puma, a brand that seems to be setting itself up in a similar business model as other hard goods/shoes/apparel companies such as Nike and TaylorMade-adidas.
The fact that it has young, vibrant tour players such as Rickie Fowler and Camilo Villegas, winner of last week’s Honda Classic, representing its products doesn’t hurt matters either, both now and in the future, as Puma develops its new diversified company. Read more

ZL = Zero Limits
October 21, 2009 by GNN · Leave a Comment
ZL in the new Cobra ZL driver stands for Zero Limits.
“Cobra has a history of developing powerful, yet easy-to-hit drivers,” said Brian Zender, general manager of Cobra Golf.
“The ZL Driver sets a new standard, in terms of providing maximum distance, forgiveness and control. It combines the best technology, materials and design we’ve ever built into a driver, plus the ZL offers the additional performance benefit of tuned ball flight,” he added.
“With our exclusive Adjustable Flight Technology, we help avid golfers achieve maximum distance and accuracy by optimizing their personal ball flight.”
Cobra uses Advanced Multi-Material Construction, in which a lightweight, high-strength carbon fibre crown and sole insert are integrated into a titanium 6-4 clubhead body and face, which utilizes Cobra’s Milled Rhombus laser-welded face insert and a new, thinner perimeter area.
The ZL also features a swingweight screw which helps shift the centre of gravity towards the heel to help provide draw bias ball flight while maintaining a square clubface alignment. The ZL come with a longer 46-inch Aldila VooDoo shaft.
Cobra’s Adjustable Flight Technology features an adjustable hosel that golfers can set to one of three face angles (O-open, N-neutral, C-closed) to provide a simple and quick way to optimize their personal ball flights.
“In the past, many club manufacturers chased various USGA limits on clubhead features and dimensions, such as moment of inertia, face height, COR etc,” says Tom Preece, Cobra Golf’s vice president of research and Development.
“When you focus on one design variable or a combination of variables, you often give up something else in return, so the mission of our R&A team was to set zero limits on engineering superior performance into the ZL driver.
“As a result, we have created a maximum distance driver. We also focused on making ZL the best sounding driver in the market. Through extensive, sophisticated computer modeling, we achieved superior sound and feel via key frequency improvements, which include a more traditional crown design,” he said.
The Cobra ZL driver is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees. It comes standard with a 46-inch Aldila VooDoo graphite shaft, in men’s R and S flexes. Lite and Women’s flexes. Other shafts are available through custom order.
