The 2012 RBC Canadian Open just got a little more colourful, with news that Victor Ciesielski of Cambridge, Ont., Monday qualified at Heron Point in Ancaster, Ont.
It was at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in 2006 when Ciesielski, a Monday qualifier then as well, stole the show with colourful ensembles, a hole in one, a raucous following and solid play that looked to make him a contender until derailing on the final day with a 77.
David Markle of Sherlburne, Ont., shot a five-under 66 to lead the way at Monday qualifying. Markle had made it to the final qualifier after topping a regional qualifier in Quebec earlier this month. He’ll be making his first appearance in the Open.
Jon Mills of Belleville, Ont., who has played in eight Opens, was second on Monday with a 68, while Ciesielski and Ben Ferguson of Ancaster tied for third, each with 69s, to take the final two exemptions into the Open.
A total of 23 Canadians will tee it up on Thursday.
