Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont., is one shot behind leader Ben Geyer of Arbuckle, Calif., after the first round of the season-opening Freedom 55 Financial Open at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
Burke shot a bogey-free, six-under 66 on Thursday and is tied for second, along with American Tyler McCumber at the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event.
“I putted really well. I didn’t drive it that well, but I kept it in between the trees for the most part. I had an approach shot to all 18 holes, and I putted outstanding and my short game was really good today,” said Burke, a two-time Canadian Amateur champion.
One shot behind Burke and McCumber are dual citizen Austin Connelly of Irving, Tx., Devin Carrey of Surrey, B.C., and Americans Mike Ballo, Jr., and Jonathan Khan.
