Nick Taylor started the day on the back nine of the Quicken Loans National in Potomac, Md., but quickly moved to the front of the pack, putting up five birdies in his first six holes.
A double bogey on the par three 17th turned out to be the one blotch on his scorecard, but one more birdie on the first hole, his 11th of the day, left Taylor tied for second just one shot off the lead after a four-under 66.
Mackenzie Hughes shot a 68 and is tied for 15th.
