Above: Mackenzie Hughes knocks his 124-yard approach inside 10 feet then drops in the putt for birdie on the par four 16th hole in Saturday’s third round
What could have been a disastrous triple bogey on the 11th hole failed to derail PGA Tour rookie Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., who goes into the final round of the RSM Classic with a shot at a wire-to-wire victory.
Hughes holds a one-shot lead over veterans Camilo Villegas and Billy Hoschel and another PGA Tour graduate, C.T. Pan, after 54 holes at Sea Island, Ga.
After birdies on the second and third holes, Hughes appeared to be taking control of the tournament before putting up a seven on the par four 11th that knocked him back into a tie for the lead.
Hughes, who had gone bogey-free to that point, recovered from the triple to record birdies on 13, 15 and 16 to finish with a two-under 68 on the day. He goes into Sunday’s finale at 16 under.
Canadians Brad Fritsch and Nick Taylor, who both made the cut, will not finish the fourth round.
