Amateur Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., carded an opening round four-under par 67 in a CN Canadian Women’s Tour event Tuesday at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Que.
Henderson, 14, holds a one-stroke lead over Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif. heading into final round play on Wednesday.
“I was hitting greens and fairways which is always key,” said Henderson, who had four birdies in a bogey-free round. “Then, I was making those clutch putts that I needed to save par or to make birdie. Overall, it was a great day.”
With a champion’s exemption into the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open on the line at this event, Henderson, who tied for seventh at the season-opener in mid-May, acknowledged the importance of maintaining her composure and playing with confidence.
“My goal is to play smart,” said Henderson. “I want to stay aggressive and just have fun out on the course and try to play as well as I can.”
Ferrero, meanwhile, posted seven birdies and four bogeys to sit in sole possession of second place at three-under 68, one shot clear of Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., who is third after a 69.
