Ken Tarling had a buddy on his mind as he won the PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone 2017 Senior Championship on Tuesday.
Saul Spears, a member of the event’s host club and a good friend of Tarling’s, died suddenly Monday.
“I was thinking about him practically all day,” said Tarling. “It really drove me forward today. I wanted to win for Saul.”
Tarling did just that, but it wasn’t easy as he needed a critical up-and-down at the 18th green to force a playoff against David Banks that he won on the first extra hole.
“I played really well today from tee-to-green,” said Tarling. “I wasn’t putting well enough though. I missed some three-footers, some four-footers, even one from 18 inches.”
It was the fifth provincial Senior crown for Tarling, who earlier this year was inducted into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame and is the only player to win the title for four consecutive years (2008-2011).
Ian Clarke and John C. Davis won their respective titles in the Sixty-Plus Senior Championship, while Jennifer Jaszek won the Women’s Championship in a playoff against Maggie Trainor.
