As golf course conditions continue to change at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club, one thing has remained the same since the beginning of this year’s Portland Cambia Classic and that is that Brooke Henderson still leads in her quest to successfully defend her first LPGA Tour title.
Henderson, who came into Saturday’s third round with a share of the lead, now holds a two-shot lead over Mariajo Uribe, who is two up on the rest of the field.
“The course has just changed so much since Friday morning and even the beginning of the week. It’s so firm and really fast right now,” said Henderson, now at 13 under, whose margin over Uribe might have been more if not for one hole.
Henderson was three under on the day and 14 under overall when she took a double bogey on the 13th hole on Saturday. Luckily for her, Uribe did the same thing.
“I just didn’t really take my time too much on the tee shot. I set my target and then just didn’t really commit to it, which is a problem for anybody, but especially for me,” said Henderson.
“So, I just tried to regroup a little bit after that and was able to make one more birdie coming in,” she added.
She did just that, adding a birdie on 16 as did Uribe, to finish with a two-under 70 on the day. Uribe turned in a 71.
“I played pretty awful today, definitely want to play better tomorrow. I mean, I hit a lot of good shots. I just didn’t capitalize on my chances. That was the first 12 holes for me,” she said.
“And then, just really that one bad hole kind of changed things around a little bit. (I’ve got to) get off to a fast start (Sunday) and see what happens,” said Henderson, who had a five-shot lead after the third round before going on to win by eight last year.
“I still like my game plan right now. I think there are definitely holes where par is good, just kind of get in and out,” said Henderson.
“There are definitely still a lot of birdie opportunities out there. If you’re hitting the ball well and hitting it in the right spots, you can definitely still shoot a low score. You’ve just got to be careful of the conditions,” she said.
