Hamilton’s Alena Sharp didn’t make her first bogey of the U.S. Women’s Open until the 14th hole on Thursday, which concluded with Sharp in a tie for 11th after an opening round, two-under 70.
Sharp made the turn at two under before a birdie and her one bogey on the back nine.
She goes into Friday’s second round six shots behind leader Mirim Lee.
Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que, is tied for 38th at even par after she shot a 72 on Thursday, while amateur Naomi Ko of Victoria shot a 74 and is tied for 67th.
Taylor Kim of Surrey, B.C., is tied for 89th at three over, while Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., and Brooke Henderson, after her successful defence of the Portland Cambia Classic last week, struggled to four-over 76s on Thursday.
Starting on the back nine, Henderson put up four bogeys and two birdies to make the turn at two-over and finished with bogeys on her final two holes of the day.
