Chris Killmer of Bellingham, Wash., is the 2012 Canadian Tour Players Cup champion after defeating Vince Covello of Philadelphia in a four-hole playoff.
The Players Cup is Killmer’s first victory on the Canadian Tour and moves him into fifth on the Order of Merit after cashing $24,000 for the victory. Killmer started the day tied with Covello at 13-under par and both finished regulation play at 15-under.
Starting on the par four, 460-yard 18th hole, both players halved the hole with pars. The duo headed back to 18 and again halved the hole with bogeys. The playoff then moved to 17 where pars halved the hole. It wasn’t until the fourth playoff hole on 18, where Covello’s three putt handed Killmer the victory.
“I’m on top of the world right now. To win the Players Cup this week and getting married to my best friend next month, the timing couldn’t be better,” said Killmer, who will be married Aug. 11.
“We had a great field this week. A lot of guys played really good golf, and to call yourself the best of that field is a great feeling,” said Killmer, who was making his 15th start on the Canadian Tour.
Covello meanwhile, was the only player this week to shoot in the 60s all four rounds. The PGA Tour Latino America member now has a sixth, a tie for fifth and a second place finish at the Players Cup.
“I’ve obviously played well here and yes, it’s disappointing not to win, but overall, I am encouraged with my game and the way I handled myself today,” said Covello, who moved to 11th on the Canadian Tour Order of Merit.
Matt Hill of Bright’s Grove, Ont,, and Victoria’s Cory Renfrew will represent the Canadian Tour at the RBC Canadian Open after both players finished first and second, respecitively, on the Order of Merit following the Players Cup. Michael Gligic of Burlington, Ont., gave Renfrew an early scare, but registered two bogeys in his last three holes.
Gligic still has a chance to get into his first RBC Canadian Open as he, along with positions three through 22 on the Order of Merit are exempt into the final qualifier set for Monday July 23rd at Heron Point in Ancaster, Ont.
