The PGA of Ontario is partnering with the PGA of Quebec to launch the inaugural Wampole Invitational to be played this summer at Wyndance Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ont.
With a total purse of $50,000 on the line, the tournament will feature 50 of the top players from both the PGA of Ontario and PGA of Quebec in a three-day event that includes the Wampole Invitational Pro-Am on Monday Aug. 25.
That will be followed by two days of stroke play competition for the 100 professionals on August 26-27.
“We have been working on this tournament for nearly a year, so to finally be able to announce it is very exciting and it will be a great opportunity for our membership,” said Kevin Purcell, executive director of the PGA of Ontario.
“Wampole Brands Inc. is an enduring Canadian brand with strong roots in both Quebec and Ontario. The company is committed to supporting Canadians in the pursuit of total health and wellness and is a perfect fit as an event sponsor for both our zones,” he added.
Jean Trudeau, director general of the PGA of Quebec, said the new event is the result of a strong relationship between the two provincial groups.
“We believe it’s time to break into the Ontario market and work with the PGA of Ontario to build new relationships and exciting opportunities for our members to compete at the highest level possible,” said Trudeau.
Wampole, which dates back to 1893, and has offices in Boucherville, Que., and Scarborough, Ont.,, has been a strong supporter of the PGA of Quebec and was looking for an opportunity to increase its profile in Ontario.
Its product line includes a wide range of herbal and nutritional supplements.
Purcell added that Wyndance offers an ideal venue. It will also host the 2014 PGA Championship of Canada later this month.
“We will see a strong contingent of players from Quebec at the 2014 PGA Championship of Canada and I’m sure they’ll want to come back to Wyndance in August for the Wampole Invitational,” said Purcell.
