What was the Canadian Tour has introduced a seven-event 2013 schedule, with one event yet to be announced.
The Times Colonist Savings Open in Victoria will open the inaugural season of PGA Tour Canada the week of June 3-9. The season will carry on until September. Missing from the schedule is the Great Waterway Classic, an inaugural event last year in Eastern Ontario, but PGA Tour officials said it is working on unspecified opportunities for this year.
“This tour presents a tremendous opportunity for the growth of the game in Canada and we’re excited about the future of this tour in the coming years,” said Tim Finchem, commissioner of the PGA Tour, which took over the Canadian Tour last fall.
“From the Presidents Cup to the RBC Canadian Open, the PGA Tour has always been welcomed in Canada. We’ve seen an outstanding appetite and level of support for the game and we look forward to engaging that interest this year,” he said.
The top five players on the Order of Merit this season will earn playing status for the 2014 WebDotCom Tour, with the top player receiving exempt status for the season. Players finishing six through 10 on the Order of Merit will be exempt into the final stage of WebDotCom qualifying school.
The tour will take a week off following the Times Colonist Savings Open, before resuming with the ATB Financial Classic June 17-23 in Calgary, followed by the Dakota Dunes Open in Saskatoon two weeks later from July 1-7.
The Syncrude Boreal Open will be played July 8-14 in Fort McMurray, Alta., followed by The Players Cup, July 15-21 in Winnipeg.
After a 12-year hiatus, The tour returns to Atlantic Canada for the inaugural Cape Breton Celtic Classic in Nova Scotia, Sept. 2-8 at the Lakes Golf Club.
The season will conclude at the Tour Championship, Sept. 9-15, with more details to be announced at a later date.
“This is a very solid starting point for our schedule,” said PGA Tour Canada president Jeff Monday.
“Our goal is to provide our members with quality events with long-term commitments, which leave a lasting impact in the communities we play and we feel we are well on our way to achieving those goals,” he said.
“We are working on several opportunities to increase the number of events not only this year but in 2014,” said Monday.
Q-School will be conducted April 7-12 at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (The Legends and The Champions courses) in Beaumont, Calif., with more details on registration coming soon.
