PGA Tour Canada has added its ninth tournament for 2013 with the addition of the Wildfire Invitational to be played Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at Wildfire Golf Club near Peterborough, Ont.
SDI Marketing, a Toronto-based marketing firm that is also operating PGA Tour Canada’s Cape Breton Celtic Classic, will also operate the Wildfire Invitational, which will be played in a pro-am format, with 64 amateurs playing the first two days of the event.
The final 36 holes will be reserved for the professionals.
Camp Maple Leaf, a summer camp for economically disadvantaged children and children of military families in the Kawarthas region of Ontario, will be the event’s official charity.
“We look forward to working with the Wildfire Golf Club team and SDI marketing to make this a truly great event,” said PGA Tour Canada president Jeff Monday of the three-year agreement.
Geoff Conant, senior vice president of SDI Marketing, said all the elements are in place for that to happen.
“With a fantastic golf course and a strong surrounding community, operating the Wildfire Invitational, it is a tremendous opportunity,” said Conant. “We believe all the elements for success are here for a great event.”
Designed by Canadian Tom McBroom and opened in 2000, Wildfire is a 6,745-yard, par-72 layout.
“The PGA TOUR Canada pros and amateurs will get a first-class experience at Wildfire,” said Wildfire president and owner Glenn Stonehouse.
“The golf course will be both challenging for the pros and enjoyable for the amateurs. We look forward to an outstanding week and are pleased to contribute to the Kawartha Region,” he added.
“I am personally gratified to be a part of giving a great camp and life experience to a deserving child through Camp Maple Leaf,” said Stonehouse.
The Wildfire event will be played just before the Tour Championship in London, Ont., at a time when players will be seeking the five WebDotCom Tour cards available through PGA Tour Canada.
