Not one, but two Canadians are within two shots of the lead held by Ryan Palmer, whose 62 was the lowest opening round score in tournament history at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, Tex.
Both David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., and Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., posted six-under scores of 66 and were in a four-way tie for third heading into Friday’s second round.
Hearn had just one bogey against seven birdies at Colonial, while DeLaet finished with six birdies and no bogeys.
In Champions Tour play, Rod Spittle of Niagara Falls, Ont., shot a two-under 69 and is in a 12-way tie for seventh, three behind co-leaders Jay Haas and Duffy Waldorf at the Senior PGA Championship in St. Louis.
It was a roller-coaster day for Spittle, who finished with six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Victoria’s Jim Rutledge shot a four-over 75.
