Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr will lend his support to the Staal Foundation Open in Thunder Bay this summer.
Orr will be onsite at Whitewater Golf Club on July 14-15, participating in various events to support the PGA Tour Canada event’s charity efforts.
“Learning that Bobby has decided to participate in our event this summer is absolutely thrilling,” said executive director Scott Smith.
“Bobby has shown a strong interest in supporting Thunder Bay and region and our efforts to raise money for charity along with the Staal Family Foundation. We hope his presence will help us take our event and its community impact to the next level,” he added.
Eric Staal agreed.
“Having a legend of the game like Bobby Orr joining us to support the Staal Family Foundation in Thunder Bay this summer is a huge honour for our family,” said Staal.
“When you think of the biggest icons in the game, Bobby is up there with the very best of them, and someone my brothers and I revered growing up. We can’t wait to have him join us in Thunder Bay this summer,” he said.
PGA Tour Canada president Jeff Monday added that presence of the former Boston Bruin/Chicago Blackhawk will add to the momentum established in the event’s first year in 2014.
“It’s a tremendous honor to have one of hockey’s all-time greats at this year’s Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel,” said Monday.
“The community support and charitable impact of the event’s inaugural year was exceptional, complimented by the presence of the Staal family and other high-profile NHLers and celebrities,” he added.
“With Bobby generously lending his support, we look forward to the event making an even bigger difference in Thunder Bay and region this year,” said Monday.
Orr added that the charitable aspect of the tournament was the motivating factor in his involvement.
“When I was approached with this opportunity, it was an easy choice for me to lend my support.,” said Orr.
“What this event and the Staal family have done in bringing people from the hockey and golf communities together and raising money for charity is incredible and I’m happy to be taking part in the event,” he added.
A more detailed schedule will be released at a later date.
