Scott Piercy opened the RBC Canadian Open with a 62 and went on to shoot three consecutive rounds of 67 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club to capture his second PGA Tour win.
Piercy beat Robert Garrigus and William McGirt by a single stroke.
“I’ve been playing good for a while now and you just need a couple of good breaks here or there and just play solid,” said Piercy, who recorded five birdies on the day, including four straight on the front nine.
“I felt like I got a couple of good breaks and continued to play solid and I’m kind of speechless, to be honest. I’m really excited to be the champion,” he said
Piercy also earned an invite to the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational next week in Akron and won’t defend his 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open title.
He also earned a two-year PGA Tour exemption that will take him through the 2014 season.
Garrigus, who entered the day atop the leaderboard with a one-stroke lead, shot 70 on Sunday, while McGirt, who was in second to start the day, posted a 69 as both players tied for second.
In his fourth appearance at the Open, Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask. earned low Canadian honours, clinching the Rivermead Cup with a final-round 70. DeLaet finished T56.
“It was a great week, a lot of support,” said DeLaet, who has two top-10 finishes on tourthis season.
“It was just cool playing in front of the home fans and a little disappointing that I wasn’t able to really get anything going this week, but at the same time, nice to be back home,” he said.
Fresh off a win at the 2012 Ontario Amateur, Toronto’s Albin Choi earned top amateur honours and claimed the Gary Cowan Medal, finishing T73.
“Well, I’m definitely happy that I made it to the weekend,” said Choi, who closed the tournament with a final round 72. “
I got off to a slow start both on Saturday and (Sunday) and I really couldn’t bounce back from it, but overall, I enjoyed my time here,” he said.
“Walking up 18 was really cool. Everyone cheered for me on 18, so that was a good experience,” he said.
