Brooke Henderson got even better than the 68 she shot at Monday qualifying to get into the Cambia Portland Classic and she goes into Friday’s second round just one off the lead.
Henderson shot a bogey-free, six-under 66 and is tied for third. Just one behind her is Hamilton’s Alena Sharp, who finished with a 67.
“It was a lot of fun out there today,” said Henderson.
“I got off to a pretty fast start. I was four under through the first nine and really took advantage of the soft and scoreable conditions out there this morning,” she said.
“The wind was very low and the greens were pretty soft, considering they’ve been pretty firm the last couple of days, but with the dew still on the greens, yeah, it was very easy to throw a ball right at the hole,” said Henderson.
“I’ve had some great scores out here on the LPGA Tour. It’s always fun to get off to a pretty fast start and see my name on top of the leaderboard. I just hope it’s there on Sunday,” she added.
Sharp bogeyed the second hole, but it would be the only one as she added six birdies to finish off the day.
