Significant rain, high winds and wet course conditions led to the first round of the Evian Championship in France to be cancelled Thursday and, with inclement weather expected for the next few days, the fifth and final major on the LPGA Tour schedule has been shortened to a 54-hole tournament.
“While we did not make this decision lightly, we believe that this is the right decision – to have the fairest, most competitive tournament for all players in this field,” said LPGA commissioner Mike Whan in a release.
“We are happy and encouraged with how well the golf course is handling the weather, and it should set up for another amazing Evian finish,” he said.
The field in France includes Brooke Henderson and Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., who normally plays the Symetra Tour but earned her ticket into the Evian after winning the PHC Classic earlier this season in Milwaukee.
Henderson will tee off at 8:29 a.m. local time on Friday, with Marchand starting her round at 9:13 a.m.
