Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., has made it into the U.S. Open through sectional qualifying at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio.
Conners, who plays regularly on the Web .com Tour, opened the 36-hole event with a bogey-free, nine-under 61 that included seven birdies and an eagle.
After adding two birdies on the first five holes of his second round, Conners took his first bogey of the day on the par four seventh and added another on the par four 10th to shrink a three-shot lead to one.
However, Conners came right back with a birdie on the 11th and struck for another on 15 and his final birdie of the day on the par five 17th before parring his final hole to finish with a three-under 67.
At 12 under, Conners topped the field by three shots, with the top four on the leaderboard earning spots in the U.S. Open, which will be played June 15-18 at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, where he’ll join PGA Tour regular Adam Hadwin as the two Canadians in the field.
