Rod Spittle of Niagara Falls, Ont., went from being a Monday qualifier to winning his first Champions Tour event yesterday at the AT&T Championship Sunday in San Antonio, Tx.
Spittle, 55, closed with a four-under 67 to finish at 12 under after birdies on 15 through 17 to force the playoff with Sluman, who also had a 67 Sunday.
Spittle, who now has a Champions Tour exemption next year, became the 11th player to win on the Champions Tour after Monday qualifying and the first in six years. He clinched the victory with a par on the first playoff hole at the par three 18th at Oak Hills Country Club.
