American Marina Alex shot a five-under 66 to lead the CP Women’s Open by one shot over Holly Clyburn of England and In Gee Chun of South Korea after the first round at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
Seven other players are tied for third at three under.
Low Canadians after the first round were Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., and Augusta James of Bath, Ont., after each shot a two-over 73 on Thursday and were tied for 80th.
Brooke Henderson, from nearby Smiths Falls and an honourary member at Ottawa Hunt, had a partisan contingent of fans waiting for her despite her early tee-off, but came away with a three-over 74 that left her tied for 107th.
Henderson took a couple of bogeys on the front nine before making her one birdie on the day at the par-five 10th. A double bogey on the par three 13th left her at three over as she parred her way in.
Afterwards, she said he putter was shaky all day, something she hoped to correct before the second round Friday. You can watch her post-round scrum in the video below.
All 14 Canadians will be hoping for a better day on Friday. With the cut projected at one over following the first round, all would miss the cut as it stood Thursday evening.
