Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont., has earned status on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada through the first reshuffle this season after finishing fourth at qualifying school on Saturday in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The first-place finisher after four rounds received exempt status, while second through 16th (no ties) will be exempt through the tour’s first reshuffle. The 17th through 40th finishers, including ties, received conditional status. A total of 43 players earned status in Port St. Lucie.
Hemmerich, a former member of Canada’s national team who had exempt status last year, shot a one-under 71 on Saturday to finish at 11 under, five shots behind American amateur William Starke, who will now be fully exempt.
“I knew my game was good enough to compete out there,” said Hemmerich.
“It was just a matter of going out there and doing it and I did, so it’s a great feeling. Playing a year up there last year, I know most of the golf courses and the routine and I’m really looking forward to it,” he added.
Elliott Whitley, who won the Ontario Amateur last year, tied for 14th at six under after a final round 67 and will be exempt through the first reshuffle as well.
