Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., shot a final round, six-under 66 at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Mo., on Sunday.
Hughes, the two-time Canadian Amateur champion in 2011-12, finished at 24 under to claim his first Web .com Tour victory. His previous best this season was a tie for fifth at last month’s Lecom Health Challenge.
The victory comes after a long weekend for Mackenzie.
On Friday, his second round was cut short after four holes due to lightning in the area, but he was three under on the day at that point and finished the next day with a second consecutive 67, before posting a bogey-free 64 in the third round, also on Saturday, to take the 54-hole lead into Sunday, when he was also bogey free.
Despite the impressive final round score from Hughes, it wasn’t without anxiety as the round wound down. American Richy Werenski eagled 18 to tie Hughes at 23 under, forcing him to at least birdie 18, which he did.
