NEW YORK—George Fellows, president and chief executive officer for Callaway Golf, denies a strong rumour within the golf industry that Callaway was in the running to acquire Ashworth, which eventually went to rival TaylorMade-adidas.
“We design golf clubs. We don’t design shirts,” said Fellows, adding that his company is currently in negotiations to replace Ashworth as the company that designs Callaway apparel.
“We’ve anticipated something like this, knowing for quite some time (that Ashworth was available),” said Fellows. “We’re in advanced negotiations with a number of people who will take over that responsibility. We’re looking at different business models that will work better for all of us.
“There should be little, if any, discontinuity as far as that is concerned,” added Fellows, who was in New York on Friday for the official launch of his company’s FT-iQ driver.
“Our ’09 line is there, it’s been sold. The ’09 fall line has been designed, is ready to go and can easily be turned over to a new player, so we really don’t anticipate any difficulty.”
