Despite rainy conditions and the Coates Championship in Ocala, Fla., and being forced to play catch-up throughout the tournament, it became apparent even before Brooke Henderson’s final round began that it was going to be an interesting day.
“Starting the day, if I would have finished second, I would have been very happy,” said Henderson.
“I had a great round this morning on my back nine, five under, and finished off with an eagle, so it was definitely good momentum going into the final round and I had it going,” said Henderson, who finished the latter half of her third round Saturday morning after play was suspended on Friday.
The eagle came at the 18th hole of her third round to set up a charge to the top of the leaderboard in the final roumd.
“I was two under for the day at one point and it was feeling pretty good,” said Henderson, who birdied the fifth and sixth holes of her final round before a bogey on eight.
She took sole possession of the lead with another birdie on 11, while Ha Na Jang bogeyed nine to drop one shot behind Henderson, who added bogeys on 14 and 17.
Jang, who also bogeyed 14, added her first birdies of the fourth round on two of her last three holes to finish at 11 under and win by two over Henderson.
“A couple putts on the back nine kind of cost me, but overall, it was a good day and I’m right in position where I want to be,” said Henderson.
“I was excited once I got off to that fast start this morning on the back nine,” she added.
“I think maybe the hardest part was knowing that I could have been better on the back nine of my final 18 and just let it slide a little bit. However, like I said before, it’s overall a great championship for me,” she said.
The final leaderboard is here.
