The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) has announced the passing of past president and longtime member, Sid Puddicombe on Thursday at the age of 85.
Puddicombe has been a CGSA member since 1967. He served on the CGSA board of directors from 1970-1975 and was the association’s president in 1974.
He was the first CGSA Superintendent of the Year recipient in 1981 and as the John B. Steel winner in 1997. Sid also served many years on the review panel for the CGSA/Toro Future Superintendent of the Year.
He was a well-respected leader in the industry and often referred to as the godfather of superintendents position in Alberta after mentoring many in the industry in Alberta and beyond.
He is survived by his wife Rose and sons, Tod, Mark and Grant, who are also long-time members of the CGSA, as well as four grandchildren.
The CGSA will make a donation in his memory to the CGSA Scholar’s Fund, which is used to support future turf professionals in completing their studies.
A Celebration of Sid’s Life will be held Wednesday, June 7th at 3 p.m. at RedTail Landing Golf Club Tournament Centre at the Edmonton International Airport.
