Last week at the RBC Canadian Open, Jim Furyk offered his opinion in this blog about the ongoing debate over the use of belly/long putters and a coming decision by golf’s governing bodies on their use.
As Furyk pointed out, however, he can’t really take a stand until he knows what the decision is and the PGA Tour can’t really do anything about it until it knows what it’s dealing with on the issue.
Is the issue on the use of the putters or is it about anchoring? Most think it’s the latter, but if you took away anchoring, are you pretty much eliminating the need for the long putters? Chicken and egg, if you will.
These putters have been around for ages, but the governing bodies are just starting to move on this issue now.
Only in golf can we have a burning issue when we don’t yet know exactly what the issue is and what will be the ramifications.
Jason Sobel of the Golf Channel offers his perspective here.
