She says she has plenty of family in Scotland, so in that sense, Claire Welsh is going home, but she’s also going to the home of golf to continue her career.
Claire Welsh, who has spent the past five-and-a-half years as marketing and communications manager for the Golf Association of Ontario, is joining the R&A. Welsh, a dual citizen, will be staying with the GAO until the end of this year before beginning her new duties Jan. 6.
“I’ve been looking to make the move to Scotland for a little while, but was just sort of waiting for the right opportunity to come up,” said Welsh.
“I really enjoy what I do for the GAO and it will be very similar to what I do now over in Scotland and obviously, on a much larger scale. It’s a global organization and it’s at the home of golf, so I’m really excited about the opportunity,” she said.
“It will be coordinating the editorial content on the R&A website, as well at the Open (Championship),” she added.
“There will be a strong focus on the amateur championships that the R&A runs, so doing the coverage and media relations for those, as well as content for the British Open website and working at the Open, as well,” said Welsh.
“I’m really looking forward to having the chance to work on a major championship,” said Welsh, who made her first visit to a major at the PGA Championship in August at Oak Hill near Rochester, N.Y.
“The GAO is a really fantastic organization to work for. It’s like working with your family, so it’s really going to be tough to say goodbye,” she said.
