Wade Borthwick, equipment technician at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, B.C., as the CGSA Equipment Technician of the Year Award recipient for 2016.
The CGSA Equipment Technician of the Year Award is presented annually to the technician whose nomination is judged to be the best example of an individual who exhibits professionalism, innovation and a team approach to make a significant contribution to their golf facility and the golf community.
As the winner of this award, Borthwick will receive an all-access registration to The Canadian Golf Course Management Conference in Victoria from Feb. 27 to March 3, four nights’ accommodation and transportation costs.
He will be presented with his award as part of the 2017 CGSA Awards Luncheon. The Awards Lunch will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 in Carson Hall at the Victoria Convention Centre.
Borthwick has been the equipment technician at Uplands Golf Club since 2013. He has not only reduced the equipment maintenance costs at Uplands but he has also developed his own software to manage the fleet.
Before moving to Victoria, Wade worked with Beach Grove Golf Course, Shaughnessy Golf Course, and OakCreek Toro Distributors.
Recently, he has been playing a dual role, helping Cordova Bay Golf Course with equipment repairs for the past six months. He regularly helps local municipalities and the University of British Columbia with their equipment, as they don’t have proper facilities to sharpen and repair some of their specialized equipment.
He has created networking opportunities for local equipment technicians, hosted numerous roundtable discussion groups and aided in joint meetings with superintendents and equipment technicians.
He has written articles for CGSA and helped Brian Youell by teaching the mechanic portion of the turf related courses at the local community college.
He will also be co-presenting with the 2015 Equipment Technician winner Yvon Jeaurond in the joint field day event at Victoria Golf Club on March 2.
