A couple of 100th birthdays highlight the 2012 calendar in Canadian golf.
In Ontario, the Summit Golf Club will celebrate its milestone with the Summit Centenary Invitational on Monday, with PGA Tour player Dustin Johnson, winner of the recent FedEx St. Jude Classic, and Canadian LPGA Tour player Lorie Kane in attendance.
The Invitational is one of many celebations being held and will feature a demonstration by the players, followed by an exhibition of 18 holes of golf on the Stanley Thompson design.
Others expected to be in attendance include Marlene Streit, the only Canadian in the World Golf Hall of Fame, Gary Cowan and Ian Leggatt.
The Summit will also host the Ontario Amateur in July.
“The day promises to be a celebration of the great game of golf,” said Steve Ralph, president of The Summit Golf Club.
“The Summit has hosted many marquee golf events over the last 100 years. The Summit Centenary Invitational promises to build on our club’s legacy of being one of the top private golf clubs in Canada,” he said.
“In addition, proceeds from the event will be donated to support junior golf in Ontario and Canada,” added Ralph.
TaylorMade-adidas Golf will be the primary sponsor of the event.
“The club is one of the premier golf facilities in the country and we have enjoyed a great partnership with the Summit for many years,” said David Bradley, general manager of TaylorMade-adidas Golf Canada.
The Summit Golf Club was founded in 1912 on 270 acres north of Toronto. While it was designed by Stanley Thompson. over the last 24 months, it has gone through a major renovation overseen by Doug Carrick.
The Alberta Golf Association is also celebrating its 100th anniversary and part of the festivities is a Centennial Gala Dinner on Sunday, Aug. 19,at the Calgary Golf and Country Club.
Gordon Gillies of Global TV will serve as master of ceremonies and guests will include Canadian Golf Hall of Fame inductee Bob Wylie amd former LPGA Tour player Cindy Pasechnik.
Individual tickets are $195, while tables of eight are $1,400, with tables of 10 going for $1,700 plus GST.
