At The Algonquin Resort, the head golf course superintendent (HGCS) reports directly to the director of golf and manages the golf course maintenance and resort teams, as well as the 230 acres of land and equipment.
The superintendent is responsible for all day-to-day grooming operations of the resort and golf course. In addition, the HGCS will provide innovative and relevant leadership.
The HGCS must have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with guest, members and staff along with a love of the game of golf and an attention to detail.
Work closely with the director of golf/head golf professional to ensure proper and effective communication throughout the golf department and resort.
Maintain and develop standard operating procedures for the golf maintenance department.
Responsible for hiring, training, coaching and counseling according to facility policy and procedure.
Prepare and adhere to the annual golf maintenance budget in conjunction with the director of golf.
Monitor financial performance to ensure success and give recommendations for necessary adjustments to the director of golf as needed.
Provide weekly commentary on the golf and resort maintenance activity, projects, cultural practices, environmental issues, expenses and labor
Manage and maintain the resort properties, which include the golf course, hotel grounds, maintenance equipment, golf car fleet, irrigation system, course infrastructure and other properties, as required.
Supervise the construction to and maintenance of the golf course whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
Render professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the director of golf as required.
Develop an environment that is empowered in culture and that passionately provides a unique and exclusive golf experience to every guest who visits the golf course.
Oversee the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish work.
Keep accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide and fertilizer applications and other cultural practices.
Initial Areas of Focus
Work with Rod Whitman designs to grow in all greens, tees and fairways.
Work on maintenance plan to change over remaining greens, tees and fairways to new grasses
Repair thin and weak spots on greens to provide smooth putting surfaces.
Heal in any sodded areas.
Provide nutritional inputs to improve stress resistance of turfs.
Improve rough areas.
Evaluate turf and soil conditions along with current maintenance practices and develop long-term recommendations to improve the golf course experience.
Develop team training.
Develop standard operating and course conditioning procedures.
Minimum five years golf superintendent experience in a supervisory role.
A degree in turf management or related field of study is required. Certification is preferred.
