I worked with Phil Berube on the board of the PGA of Alberta for 15 years on long-range planning, a home for the PGA and other business through fun times and tough times andth I look forward to continuing that association now that he’s accepted the position of executive director of Alberta Golf.
It’s through that long association that I developed a respect for how good he is at what he does, his passion for golf, and his skill at dealing with people, developing partnerships and relationships, the dynamic that he brings to a board room or a presentation, or just in rallying the troops.
I’ve learned so much from him and enjoy working with him, so his decision to return from Ontario, where he’s from, is a positive for Alberta. I didn’t think he could stay out of golf, but respect that this was a big decision to return.
I sit on the board of Alberta Golf as well, so things haven’t changed much from our days on the PGA of Alberta board. Alberta Golf reaches out to the grassroots and to amateur golf, encouraging people to play more and be more involved.
Now, Phil’s executive director and I sit on the board, so we’ve come full circle. We’re going to miss Matt Rollins, but it’s a comfort to know Phil is coming in to carry on.
It’s no secret that there are challenges ahead in a struggling economy in Alberta, but I believe Phil can come in and make things work. He will give the board strength and he has the gift for rallying the troops and making things happen.
The partnerships that he’s developed and the people he knows at the PGA of Alberta are so strong. Those associations need to work together and, it’s not that we don’t, but everyone knows Phil and that particular relationship will be much stronger.
The one thing I’ve said about Phil is he’s very organized and structured, so I don’t know why we get along as we do because I’m all over the place. Yet, people are Phil’s strength and he’s now surrounded by good people at Alberta Golf.
He’s the perfect person to step into a vacant position in what could be challenging times.
