In response to the current GNN Poll, I’m taking a couple of weeks off over the holidays, although I will have a laptop with me just in case.
My family is going to Hawaii for the holidays. My one brother lives in Prague, where he’s a journalist for Radio Free Europe, and I haven’t seen him for about three years.
My other brother lives in Portland, Ore., and my wife Taryn and son Lane are coming along on a getaway that was my father’s idea. He’s been trying forever to get us all together and it just never worked out.
He came up with this plan about a year ago, when he said, `You know what? You guys have a year to figure it out. Make it happen!’
It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to do it, but with brothers living all over, it will be nice to have everybody together.
This will be the first time I’ve ever taken so much time off over the holidays. Usually, Christmas Day is the only time we close and everyone in this town knows that Christmas Day is free golf day, whether it’s supposed to be or not.
I never used to think that taking an extended break was all that important, but the last couple of years, I’ve actually taken some holidays that weren’t centred around golf.
I think three years ago was the first time I took a holiday without my golf clubs. We went to the interior and just hung out at the lake.
The thing about a break like that is you come back recharged and refreshed. You come back with more ideas and I think it’s a great thing. In a lot of European countries, they’ll take about a month off and they find that productivity goes up.
I don’t think a lot of people realize how beat down you get over the course of a year. A lot of people don’t even take holidays and they don’t realize until they actually do it how much of a benefit it can be to take a rest.
The ones who do take a break might go to Mexico or Hawaii and realize that it’s not until the third or fourth day that they actually start to relax.
In the next few years, my son will be getting to the point that he remembers such holidays, so when Lane is four, five, six years old, I’d like to enjoy a lot of things with him, including Christmas.
Whatever your plans are this season, I hope you do get some sort of break from work and have a great holiday! See you next year.
