I’m making a quick trip to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando and look forward to networking with a lot of people at the Orange County Convention Centre.
I still like to get out on the show floor and see what’s new out there, whether it’s bag tags or the latest teaching device.
With the Windmill Group, we recently had a meeting to talk about our buying patterns. Due to the number of properties under our umbrella, there are a lot of companies who would like to do business with us because, for example, we’re buying eight or nine or 10 rental fleets instead of one.
We are more buying by committee. When I was at Angus Glen near Toronto, we bought by committee too, but Wil Koopmans kind of took the lead.
We all have our allegiances to various suppliers and companies, but we have to to do what’s best for our brand and what’s best for our properties. That’s not to say that many brands can’t co-exist, but we have to be conscious of the fact hat we’re buying and recommending for all of our properties and go out and find the best deal possible.
The Orlando show may open up a couple of new doors for spring/fall buying, but I’ve always found some great little gems there. There will always be a better mousetrap. It’s great to see the product launches and it’s great to network down there.
