As I mentioned in this recent blog, I like to think I’m open minded enough to give something new a try and so it was that I went for a spin on a Segway a few years ago in Scottsdale, Az.
My feeling at the time was that I felt a little unsteady on it, but for the most part, it was a fun experience. I’m sure, however, that I’d wouldn’t want a Segway for every round I played.
I have yet to try a GolfBoard, the latest cool way to transport the users of golf courses, but I would suspect I’d have the same reaction. It would probably be fun to try it out, but the novelty would likely wear off quickly.
However, I am aware of some golf operations that are using GolfBoards and a GNN Poll that we ran on the subject indicated that 32 per cent of respondents felt the golf operation where they work would be extremely interested in investing in GolfBoards.
Now, it appears that self-driving golf carts are getting closer to becoming reality. A couple of students at the University of Waterloo in Southern Ontario went for a spin on one recently, according to this story from CBC.
I know they’re testing self-driving cars as well these days, but in response to the golf cart, my first reaction is that I would be nervous at first if I was riding one because I wouldn’t be sure of the technology.
Secondly, unlike the Segway and the GolfBoard, I don’t see the fun factor involved in a self-driving cart, although I guess curiosity about the technology would be at its peak.
On the other hand, I don’t mind driving a golf cart, or even being a passenger, so I wonder are we coming up with a self-driving golf cart just because we can?
You tell me because that’s the topic of this week’s GNN Poll and it’s similar to what we asked you about the GolfBoards.
Assuming they become reality, would the operation where you work be interested in them?
You can answer below or on the GNN home page and if you’d like to add more thoughts on this subject, please use the Comments section below.
If self-driving golf carts became reality, what type of investment would the operation where you work make in them?
- Wouldn’t be interested at all (81%)
- Maybe a few carts (19%)
- A big investment (0%)
