As you read in this story that GNN linked up to last week, Topgolf is finally coming to Canada in a partnership with Cineplex, the movie theatre company that has now found a new type of entertainment venue for its customers.
Multiple Topgolf locations are expected to open in the next couple of years across Canada and it can’t come fast enough for those who have visited one of its U.S. venues.
Topgolf locations use multi-tiered driving ranges at which customers aim at giant targets in the landing area and several different games can be played.
The ambience is much different than a traditional golf setting as each climate-controlled hitting bay has music and televisions with live sports available, as well as food and beverage service.
It’s very similar to a sports bar and it’s been wildly successful, particularly among the younger people that golf is trying to lure to the game. Yet, it’s enough like golf to make the connection between Topgolf and the more traditional game.
As a result, the golf industry in this country could be looking at the arrival of Topgolf one of two ways, the first being that it is taking yet another piece of the discretionary dollar pie that could be going to traditional operations.
On the other hand, its appeal to younger people is obvious and Topgolf could prove to be a gateway into the more traditional game and even offer some ideas from its locations that would lure the younger demographic.
How do you see the arrival of Topgolf in this country? That’s the topic of this week’s GNN Poll.
