As I mentioned in this blog last week, golf has to get past its obsession with the PGA Tour and realize that there’s more to golf than the millionaires.
Of course, you would never know it in the revived debate about rolling back distance on the golf ball, a topic that everybody from Tiger Woods to Jack Nicklaus to Gary Player to USGA executive director Mike Davis to Bridgestone president and CEO Angel Ilagan to his counterpart at Acushnet (Titleist), Wally Uihlein, has chimed in on.
The ball is one factor, but not the only one, that’s increasing distance, but if the marquee names of the game want to get together in a room and hash it out among themselves, then so be it, but limit the conversation to the PGA and European Tours.
The other alternative is to just let them shoot the lights out and whatever score becomes the norm as time progresses, so be it. Let the chips fall where they may.
Do something or do nothing, but let’s end this debate because it’s getting repetitive year after year. Good heavens, we’ve heard from enough associations, players and all-time greats to come to an informed decision. Just make that call and let us know what you’ve decided, then stick with it.
Golf just loves to drag out a debate and since the major tours are done for the time being, what better time to revive a topic that is years old?
There comes a time when you’ve got to quit waggling and take your shot.
Can’t we come up with a fresh topic to fill a slow news day or at least resolve this tired old debate instead of letting it fade away when Tiger returns later this week, only to be brought back at some point in the future?
Have you had enough of this topic? That’s the topic of this week’s GNN Poll.
