Over the past few weeks, we’ve discussed frequently the positive attitude that seemed to be prevalent in the Canadian golf industry as 2012 drew to its conclusion and seems to be continuing into the early stage of 2013.
Admittedly, it’s a cautious optimism. Events beyond our control such as weather and the global economy have a way of shaking that confidence.
In the past five years, we’ve been hit with a recession here in Canada and economic situations in the United States and Europe have made it possible to slip back in at any time. While the U.S. only temporarily went over the fiscal cliff, there are battles ahead over the debt ceiling.
Let’s not go into that right now. Instead, it might be better for the soul of anybody who works in the golf industry to concentrate on a report from the U.S. that rounds were up as much as 7.5 per cent last year or that weather was mostly good news for the industry in 2012.
Having that positive attitude will be more productive as we strive to improve the things we can control such as finding new sources of revenue, improving participation and sales in the pro shop or finding creative ways to pump up food and beverage business or offer better customer service.
Of course, motivation to reach higher standards can be enhanced through compensation packages and better compensation packages can be the result of better business. It’s a fine balance, but both sides of that equation need to be recognized.
Assuming better days are ahead, here’s hoping 2013 means a step up financially after the uncertainty of the past few years.
How has the past five years been for you, year over year? That’s the topic of our GNN Poll this week.
Obviously, we’re not asking for specifics, although you may want to include your benefits/pension into the mix when you answer the question. What we’re asking is more general. How you would rate your income over the past five years?
Have you made significant gains year over year?
Has your compensation climbed steadily with improvements each year?
Has it been flat, neither increasing or decreasing significantly?
Have you lost ground?
Or have you been hit hard, either through pay cuts, loss of hours or job loss?
How would you rate your compensation from the golf industry over the past five years?
- Flat (38%)
- Steady improvement (32%)
- Decreased (15%)
- Significantly down (13%)
- Significant gains (2%)
