The Masters has come to be known as the unofficial start to the Canadian golf season, but it’s just one of the goofy things we say in the game. The reality is golf doesn’t normally get going until three or four weeks later in many parts of the country.
Still, when you hear about the drive up Magnolia Lane or the dogwoods and azaleas and see the vistas of green with splashes of colour emanating from Augusta National, it puts Canadians in the right mind for the season ahead.
This year, the Masters still isn’t the start of the Canadian golf season. It actually comes later than many of the opening days that have taken place across the country due to the unseasonably warm winter/spring.
When you’re talking people playing golf on Christmas Day in Southern Ontario, you know that 2015-16 was an aberration and while that may cause concern about climate change, there’s no reason golfers couldn’t take advantage.
Golf courses across Canada began opening, even if just temporarily, in February and that trend continued through March. Now that April 1 has arrived, it’s no joke that the golf season is underway at many locations.
Even if there is a spring snowstorm, what it leaves behind won’t last long, so the season, wherever you are, will soon continue once again, assuming you’ve already opened.
If a snowstorm is in the cards, many in the golf industry might see it as good timing if it came this week, which will give them more time to watch the proceedings at Augusta.
People may actually be working at golf operations this week as opposed to other years when they had yet to open at Masters time.
Even if industry types don’t actually work at a golf operation, they may be tempted to play, which will cut into the amount of time they spend watching the Masters, as well.
That brings us to this week’s question in the GNN Poll. Do you expect the early start to the golf season to cut into the time you normally spend watching the Masters?
