From Mother’s Day to the May 2-4 weekend, the special days and holidays are starting to fly as we chug towards summer.
Actually, May 2-4 is a bit of a misnomer, more about a case of a popular beverage many of us consume on long weekends than the actual date. Victoria Day actually takes place on Monday, May 20 this year, but who wants to nit-pick with a long weekend on the immediate agenda.
While the Masters is recognized as the unofficial start to the Canadian golf season, the reality is that it begins closer to the just-concluded Players Championship, which some call the fifth major, although it, isn’t really, just like the May 2-4 isn’t the unofficial start of summer that many make it out to be.
Again, who wants to nit-pick. A long weekend is upon us and by May 2-4, golf courses are open in Canada and we’re starting to get some indication of how the coming season will go.
Based on what you’ve seen so far, what’s your take? That’s the subject of the GNN Poll this week, which may be a shortened one as many skip work on Friday to get an early start on the long weekend.
We ran a similar poll at the beginning of this year, asking readers how they saw business shaping up compared to 2012. The majority of respondents, or 47 per cent, said they saw business being better, while 44 per cent expected it to be the same and nine per cent expected it to go down.
Does that still hold? That’s what we want to find out.
Based on another poll and conversations with golf operators around the country, a lot of golf courses opened later than expected this year due to the weather.
Since the previous poll was conducted at the beginning of the year, there have been some disturbing headlines about consumer debt and economic forecasts. You can click here, here and here for other economic indicators to keep an eye on as we move forward.
The weather and the recent headlines about the general economy are all developments that have taken place since we first asked the question at the beginning of the year, but the important thing is what you see at the golf operation where you work.
So, do you feel the same as you did about this season as you did at the beginning of the year? That’s what we’d like to know.
Based on what you’ve seen going into May 2-4 weekend, how do you see your business shaping up compared to 2012?
- Down (62%)
- Same (24%)
- Better (14%)
