Who says that golf is stuffy?
In 2013, the game showed it has a sense of humour through videos that were introduced via You Tube and other means.
My personal favourite is Mike from Mike’s Golf Shop in Tennessee, who apparently buys golf clubs because he said it over and over … and over and over and over again. He didn’t say if he sold golf clubs, although we might assume he does.
We’re not sure how this You Tube commercial worked for Mike’s business, but he did receive close to 400,000 views. You can add to that number by clicking here.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy ran into a trash talking robot that elected to take on the two-time major winner in a contest on the range that you can watch here.
McIlroy may have had his ego bruised, but Chi-Chi Rodriguez had more than hurt feelings on the Golf Channel’s Big Break NFL. We won’t go into details, but you can find out for yourself here. We understand Chi-Chi is okay and his sense of humour was in good working order right after the incident.
The Golf Boys — Rickie Fowler, Ben Crane, Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson — made a comeback with 2.Oh here.
Even the USGA got into the act with an entertaining series of commercials meant to deal with slow play, using a line from the great Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack.
While they are entertaining, I’m not sure what impact they’ll have on the actual problem, but my personal favourite was this one featuring Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood.
Every now and again, golf can project to the public that it’s a fun place to be. Now, the key is doing that more often.
