It’s been just over a month since the Liberals won a majority in the federal election after a long, drawn-out campaign in which plenty of promises were made and it remains to be seen if they will be kept now that it’s over.
One of the promises made was a tax break for the middle class, although what exactly defines the middle class has yet to be announced, but conceivably, that could mean more disposable income to be spent on the golf industry, whether that means green fees, memberships, clubs, apparel or food and beverage.
Or will any money that this undefined group receives just go back into other government-related expenses such as carbon taxes or those imposed on their constituents by the various provincial governments, things such as road tolls, for example?
There has been talk that the Liberals may lower the taxes paid by small businesses from the current rate of 11 per cent to perhaps, nine per cent, but a comment by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in this story drew fire.
“We have to know that a large percentage of small businesses are actually just ways for wealthier Canadians to save on their taxes, and we want to reward the people who are actually creating jobs, and contributing in concrete ways.”
Putting aside the somewhat insulting tone to that quote that a small business owner may interpret, one has to wonder if the small business tax will be reduced at all, but it remains to be seen.
The previous Conservative government led by Stephen Harper fashioned itself as business friendly and a solid economic steward, but it wasn’t enough to get them re-elected.
Do you see the new government doing a better job of creating a better business environment? Do you expect the business environment to improve during their tenure?
That’s the topic of this week’s GNN Poll.
