Fresh Ideas Aren’t Hatched In Your Fiefdom
September 1, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
The term “thinking outside the box” has quickly become an overused cliché and anybody who uses it seems to be going against its original intent and that is to come up with new, fresh ideas instead of resorting to strategies (or in this case, terms) that have been used over and over again.
Let’s go beyond [...]
Bravo B.C. On Your HST Fight
August 31, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
For all the jokes I make to GNN blogger Kyle German and other friends of mine from the Wet Coast, I must come clean and admit that I admire the folks in British Columbia who are fighting the HST. You can read about it here.
I guess the reason that B.C.’s fight against the HST has [...]
Tendinitis Is Limiting DeLaet’s Swing
August 30, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
Graham DeLaet missed the cut at The Barclays last week and will be out for a month as the playoffs wind down on the PGA Tour, not a great thing to happen when you’re a rookie trying to keep your card.
However, the forced layoff may be a blessing in disguise for DeLaet for two reasons.
Do Outsiders See Golf As Stifling?
August 29, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
As I mentioned in Thursday’s blog here, the outside world looking in at golf may not be as accepting of its traditions as those who have played or worked within the game for years.
That statement may cause the purists – or those who want to be seen as purists – to bristle, citing the honour, [...]
Wie Maintains Three-Shot Lead
August 27, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
Michelle Wie added a three-under-par 69 to Thursday’s 65 and takes a three-shot lead into weekend action at the CN Canadian Women’s Open in Winnipeg.
Wie got off to a shaky start with a bogey on the St. Charles Country Club’s 11th hole, her second of the day, and the same par three she aced during [...]
The Magic Returns For Albertan At Tour Championship
August 26, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
Kris Wayslowich may have picked the ideal time to get out of his season-long funk.
The native of Lethbridge, Alta., finished the first round of the $325,000 Canadian Tour Championship with an eight-under 62 at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club.
Wasylowich leads fellow Canadian Ryan Yip by one shot with six-time Canadian Tour winner Mike [...]
Golf Needs To Listen, Not Talk
August 25, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
The consensus among hockey folks who I knew when I was closer to that game than now is that this week’s World Hockey Summit in Toronto will accomplish little, if anything of consequence.
That’s not unlike Canadian golf’s version of a summit that took place over five years ago in Toronto that led to the Play [...]
Confessions Of An Instant Info Junkie
August 24, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
In the past couple of months, I’ve gotten more into … oh, hang on a sec – just let me check this.
Sorry, as I was saying, in the past couple of months, I’ve gotten more into the Facebook account that I’ve had for about a year-and-a-half now and … excuse me just a minute…BRB.
LOL!!!
Okay, I’m [...]
Would You Divulge Your Numbers?
August 22, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
As discussed in a blog here last week, the main challenge facing the Rounds Played Program being run by the National Golf Course Owners Association and the Canadian PGA in a joint partnership is trust.
The fear of sensitive business information falling into a competitor’s hands as part of this program is a strong one, but [...]
Vegas Attendance Up. How About Orders?
August 19, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
Here’s an example of the mixed messages we’re getting on the economy.
Reed Exhibitions is reporting a 16 per cent increase in attendance at the PGA Fall Expo, which was held this week in Las Vegas.
The Vegas show moved to the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and was held during “fashion week” in that city and while [...]
Data Program Promises Confidentiality
August 17, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
In this era when even having your e-mail address fall into the wrong hands results in an unwanted barrage of solicitations, there is an understandable reluctance to dish out information, especially with a perception that sensitive business information could fall into competitors’ hands.
That’s the challenge faced by the National Golf Course Owners Association and now [...]
Are You Ready To Go For It In 2011?
August 15, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
As I mentioned in a blog here last week, there are some economic storm clouds on the horizon lately, which may or may not mean a slip back into recession after just emerging from the one that hit late in 2008.
Disappointing unemployment numbers, a volatile stock market and uncertainty on how the Harmonized Sales Tax [...]
CPGA Women’s Title Was “Huge” For Defending Champ
August 12, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., will tee off on Tuesday in her defence of the Canadian PGA Women’s Championship she won last year.
Shepley shot 66-69 to win by a single shot over Clarissa Childs of Columbia, S.C. It was Shepley’s first win as a professional, but not her last.
“Winning this national championship last year was [...]
Foley Is At The Crossroads Of His Career
August 11, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
This may be very un-medialike of me, but not being at Whistling Straits for this week’s PGA Championship, I have no direct access to Canadian Sean Foley and therefore, no inside knowledge of his ties with the troubled Tiger, once again the centre of attention at the fourth and final major of the year.
The last [...]
Foley/Tiger Speculation Heating Up
August 10, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
The heat has been turned up again on speculation that Canadian Sean Foley is about to become the new swing coach for the troubled Tiger Woods.
My buddy Chris Stevenson is at Whistling Straits for this week’s PGA Championship and has the latest in his Sun Media column.
In the past few years, Foley has made quite [...]
Volatility Makes Forecasting A Gamble
August 9, 2010 by Ian Hutchinson
I’ll be the first to admit that Canada pulled out of last year’s recession a lot faster than I expected and certainly better than the United States, which seems to sink in deeper every time it appears to be pulling itself out of its economic quagmire.
The U.S. situation is just one of the mixed economic [...]
