You Think You’re Good? You Can Always Be Better

February 15, 2012 by

Every year, it’s important for us at Coppinwood to show the membership that we feel we’re the best and we’re going to act like we’re the best.

In my 34 years in the golf business, no matter where I’ve worked, we’ve always tried to get better each year. If you’re not going forward, you going backwards and you can’t rest on your laurels.

There’s always a new golf course, chef, golf professional or service philosophy somewhere else and it’s wise to be aware of that. Recently, I’ve been meeting with our head professional Dennis Firth and we both agree that okay, we had a good year, but there’s always that word “but” at the end of the sentence.

That means how do we get better?

In our minds, we can’t be perfect, so every winter, we retool to get better the following season. That’s the way to go instead of putting it on auto-pilot.

The things that you love and your members love, you bring back, but every year, there’s something that needs to be tweaked or changed.

In my mind, you always have to be struggling to be better. Complacency doesn’t work.

I like Kevin’s comments this morning. It is so true one of the greatest dangers for our industry is complacency and a very high % of clubs suffer from it.
We need to be our VERY BEST – as Kevin suggested bring some freshness to your operation. Invite some Mystery Shoppers to visit your website – see how user friendly you are – talk to guests that have visited your facility – see where you are good and where there is room for improvement.
2012 can be a year of growth in the Golf Industry if we all do a little head space adjustment and make it easier for people to get into the game – have more fun with the game – play more often.
    Thanks Kevin..
