New People Offer Fresh Perspective
February 7, 2012 by Tiffany Gordon
We’re starting our first full year with Tyler Patroch, our golf course superintendent, and he’s been a great addition to the club.
We had 65 resumes for that position. When we were first looking, I was pretty overwhelmed and I’ll be the first to admit it.
Tyler and I just hit if off immediately. He’s very well-educated and was motivated to come back to Alberta with his young family after working at Olympic View in Victoria.
It was a tough decision to hire him simply because we’d had so many applicants, but he has a true passion and commitment to the club.
He’s a team player who is putting his own mark on the club. He’s very visible, very hands-on and his communication skills are fantastic with the membership and staff.
It didn’t take long to trust him and some of the things he wanted to accomplish. That’s important because you have to be receptive to change. You’ve got to give them the room to get things done and it’s not easy because of our temptation to stick with what’s worked in the past.
While it may have worked in the past, that’s not to say it can’t be done better or in a different way. Life changes even if it is a challenge at times.
I’ve always been an advocate of just trying something new. What’s the worst that could happen? If you try it and the members don’t like it and the staff doesn’t work well with it, you just don’t do it again.
I don’t want to be one of those complacent people who just always do things the same way. Things change and you’ve got to engage your staff and make them a part of it by listening to them.
If you don’t trust people, you shouldn’t have them there. At some point, you have to let it all unfold as people bring in new ideas based on ongoing education and person experience.

Well said Tiffany! Sounds like Tyler has a great environment to work in. All the best to you and the CottonWood team in 2012.
