Invitational Brings Players/Members Together
August 24, 2010 by Kevin Thistle
We recently held the Coppinwood Invitational, a tournament played by the top amateurs and professionals in the area and while it’s a competitive event, it’s also a great way to bring members together.
The club really gets behind this event. It’s really kind of exciting because some members came out and caddied and some did scoring. We had members come out to be spotters and one of our members was the official photographer. Others just came out to watch the golf and there was some great golf.
They set up the driving range like a PGA Tour event. We had official starter on both tees because we did split tees. As a result of the way we ran it, we got some great e-mails from the competitors.
They really thought it was a first-class event and we tried to treat them right. If they got there early, we had something for them to eat. On the golf course, when they made the turn, we had water, sandwiches and Gatorade for them and then, we had a nice dinner and awards ceremony afterwards.
We also donated some money to Golf Canada’s Golf in Schools program and we’re adopting some schools in the Stouffville/Uxbridge area.
By hosting this event, we got some great competition from the players and we got back to give back to the community.
It’s also a great social event. The members came out to watch the golf and some stuck around for a drink with the guys.
We call it the Richard Grimm Cup, named after “Mr. Canadian Open” himself. Dick is on the committee and he put a lot of time into the event. He was there for the awards ceremony and spoke.
When played ended, everyone was on the balcony and we had the ceremony out by the 18th green with the trophy. It really was reminiscent of a Canadian Open presentation. We’re hoping that the $5,000 first prize will go as high as $10,000.
Such an event turns into a great day both on and off the golf course.
