Rising Star On Way To Winnipeg

The CN Canadian Women’s Open will have a young phenom in the field when Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., tees it up at the St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg.

“She is a young and upcoming golfer who hits the ball a long way. What she has accomplished in her young career at such a young age is a testament to her ability,” said tournament director Sean Van Kesteren.

Thompson, 15, does have an impressive resume. At the age of 12, she became the youngest player ever to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, something she did in the following two years, as well.

She also won the 2008 United States Golf Association Junior Girls Championship.

Last year, Thompson was a semi-finalist at the USGA’s Women’s Amateur and tied for 34^th at the U.S. Women’s Open. She also led for two rounds at the Navistar LPGA Classic before tying for 27^th.

Earlier this year, she tied for 24^th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA Tour’s first major of the year.

Thompson is expected to turn pro next month.
