CPGA Championship Is Part Of Our Heritage
April 28, 2010 by Kyle German
The return of the Canadian PGA Championship would be great for the association, especially with our 100th anniversary coming up in 2011.
I think for a faction of Canadian PGA members who come from a playing background or know the tradition of the event, it’s huge.
There are a lot of newer members of the association or members who may not have the playing background who may not be concerned about it, but I think it’s important to have it back.
It’s part of the Canadian PGA’s culture and heritage and I think if it goes too much longer without having it around, it’s going to be forgotten and that would be a shame.
I think it’s already getting to that point. You look at the person who passed the PAT a couple of years ago and been in the association for two years, that person doesn’t know anything about it.
It would be nice to have it back for the association centennial next year. It’s a big time in Canadian PGA history and we want to make sure that everything’s where it needs to be. Anything that can make good news is a good thing.
A centennial is something that we need to celebrate. The national office is putting together a good plan to celebrate it and I’m sure they’ll do a great job.
As far as the Canadian PGA Championship goes, it will be interesting to see how they separate it from the Titleist and FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professionals Championship. Would they just roll it into one event? I’m not sure how I would feel about that.
The Canadian PGA Championship took on so many personas in the years before it ended in 2005, be it a Nationwide Tour event or Canadian Tour event.
Should it be affiliated with a tour or should it be a separate Canadian PGA event. If the last one’s the case, do we need to have a championship where it’s only Class As, or can we have one that includes assistant professionals, and teaching professionals, one in which all of our categories are represented?
We have an assistants’ championship. We have a club professionals’ championship. Should we have one where everybody is represented?
Obviously, sponsorship of such an event is top priority and I hope something happens soon. I’m curious about what the format will be, where it’s going to be and when it will take place.

Kyle, at one time I believe the CPGA trophy was the oldest still in use championship trophy in North american golf, with some historical names enscribed upon it. Unfortunately the runners up weren’t on the trophies; when I came 2nd in 1971 still seems like yesterday. We had it at Bayview for some reason and Jimmie Johnstone brought all the names to life for me, brilliant!
good comment, Kyle….
I really believe the event must be held, even if the Association funds the purse itself. I certainly am not on the inside, however, it seems like we have loost site of the fact the trophy is emblematic of the Canadian PGA Championship……it doesn’t need foreign players, or to be part of the nationwide Tour, or to be part of the Canadian Tour………it needs to the championship for the members of the Association to play in……there are a lot of good players in the Canadian PGA and they desrve to have a championship….if Mike Weir, as an example can’t fit it into his schedule, that is unfortunate but ok…..the PD Ross Trophy was around before MW and it will be around after MW.
Its been five years now, and if it goes on much longer the association might as well forget it and retire the trophy………..Stan Leonard, George Knudson, Jim Rutledge, Dave Barr, Dick Zokol…..that’s not a bad list of winners for a tournament………
Let’s hope they get it underway, regardless of the purse…….they might be surprised who shows up to underwrite it ……..Timex did that 25 years ago because they wanted to support a Canadian championship
