We’ve Got The Opening Day Buzz Going On

April 19, 2010 by

At Coppinwood, we’re opening later this week and the meetings leading up to opening day have been plenty.

For one thing, we’ve had staff orientation with our head professional Dennis Firth taking care of the golf side of things and Jason Braganza handling the food and beverage side.

I like to pop in, say hi and thanks for joining us this year and give them my philosophy on service in the golf industry.

There are a lot of different staff and product knowledge meetings with the odd wine-tasting thrown in. We have board of directors, finance committee, men’s golf committee meetings as opening day draws closer.

They’re all good, fun meetings because we’re getting ready for the season. It just seems that from March 15 to April 15, the meetings just ramp up and they’re different than the ones we have in November and December.

There’s excitement in the air, anticipation of opening and the meetings are quite fun because we’re talking about what we’re looking forward to this year.

The meetings are something like the Masters. I remember since I was a kid, as soon as the Masters was on, the clubs came out even if there was snow on the ground, not that there is these days in Southern Ontario.

You would get the clubs out, check the grips and make sure the equipment was ready for the first day of golf. Sometimes, we’re golfing by the Masters, sometimes we’re not.

The meetings that we’re having now offer the same feeling professionally as the Masters because you’re leading up to something fun and there’s a big buzz with the staff, suppliers and members/clients.

There’s a major checklist that needs to be looked over. The pro shop is one thing because if you don’t have a shirt, you can always order one. It’s the small things that get you – the big things you never overlook. For example, do you have enough pencils?

If you’ve got a good team, we’re checking, double-checking and triple-checking each other for opening day.

You work backwards. You start in October and, if you’re on top of it in the fall, you know your inventory is in shape for opening day and that will make the experience that much more fun.
